It is still too early to engage in an assessment of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East which on 10-24 October 2010 brought together in the Vatican more than 170 synod fathers. Indeed, it is the months to come that will indicate the concrete ways that the numerous proposals made during the synod will be implemented. But in this edition of Oasis, side by side with the text of the homily given off the cuff by the Holy Father during the celebration of the Hora Tertia, we have wanted to provide a number of photographs. We do not do this out of a wish to provide documentary commentary or out of a love for exoticism, even of an ecclesial kind. We are, instead, convinced that the language of these images transmits in an immediate way the most singular feature of this synod, namely the experience of lived communion which, as the Holy Father observed during the lunch at the end of the deliberations of the synod, ‘is also, in itself, witness.’ To continue your reading buy the hard copy issue or subscribe to read all the articles.
