Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, he received his PhD from the University of Toronto. From 2011 to 2015, he was the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, the premier American scholarly journal for the study of religion. In 2008, he was appointed Fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities. His latest publication is Muslims and the Making of America (2016). He is the author or editor of five other books, as well as over 50 book chapters and scholarly articles about religion.
