Azyumardi Azra earned his MA, MPhil and PhD degrees in History from Columbia University (1992). At present he is senior Professor of History at the Graduate School of the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta, Indonesia. He was Deputy for Social Welfare at the Office of Vice-President of the Republic of Indonesia (2007-2009) and Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University for two terms (1998-2002 and 2002-2006). Thanks to his efforts in promoting academic cooperation and interreligious dialogue, he was awarded with the Fukuoka Prize 2014 (Japan).
