Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, the Archbishop of Lyons, was born on 17 October 1950 in Rabat (Morocco). After taking a degree in philosophy at the Sorbonne (Paris IV), he entered the Seminary of the Carmelites in 1973, while obtaining a degree in theology at the Institut Catholique of Paris. He was ordained a priest on 17 December 1997 for the diocese of Créteil, and was appointed Bishop of Moulins on 1 October 1998. Promoted to the see of Lyon on 16 July 2002, he was made a Cardinal at the consistory of 21 October 2003.
